The Orvis Safe Passage® DS Reel and Gear Case |
|
Sunday, 11 March 2007 |
Description:
This handsome gear case measures 14"W x 10"D x 6"H. The body of the case is 6” deep, allowing you to store most any light to medium-tackle reels, conventional or fly, as well as anything else you feel like bringing along on your next adventure. The body of the bag is divided by a series of adjustable foam core barriers, which allow you to segment the bag into neat compartments. The underside of the lid features shallow mesh pockets for low profile items. There is briefcase style handle on the top of the bag as well as shoulder strap for hands free travel.
What we liked:
First of all, this is great looking bag. One thing Orvis has proven over time is their ability to master the aesthetics of almost all their products. But what about practicality? I tested this bag on a number of local trips and cross-country jaunts. I packed conventional gear on striper trips to Montauk, NY and fly-reels on multiple travel excursions. It was carried on flights – tossed in the backs of pick-ups, brought on board our boats and even tossed alongside the famed Cattaragus creek for a snowy day of Steelheading in western NY.
The results were clear: the removable and adjustable interior foam barriers were fantastic. Everything I packed was perfectly snug and protected from only the most violent treatment. For a guy who is notoriously unorganized – this product is a lifesaver. Whether it’s cameras, binoculars, fishing reels, wireless devices, cigars, fly-boxes or anything you can think of – it will be neatly, safely stored in this eye-catching travel bag.
Room for improvement?
The Orvis Safe Passage Reel and Gear Case is 99% perfect. Its good looking, intelligently designed, rugged and affordable. The one feature that I missed time and time again was an external pocket. I use this bag as my exclusive carry-on when I travel on fishing trips. I found myself constantly unzipping the entire bag to access things like magazines, boarding passes, blackberry etc. Each time I did this I became paranoid that my favorite lure/reel/fly/leader may have fallen out. A slim external pocket the length of the bag would be the one enhancement to this otherwise outstanding reel and gear bag.
